Description:
This setting of the beloved spiritual is born out of the timeless exhortation found in Matthew 5:14–16: “You are the light of the world... let your light shine before others.” While the song remains a staple of American musical heritage, this setting provides a fresh perspective by marrying traditional lyrics with the driving, infectious energy of contemporary, upbeat gospel. Throughout the piece, the piano serves as a conversational partner to the voices and the accompaniment is designed with the freedom of the gospel tradition in mind, featuring improvisational ad libs and soulful flourishes that allow the music to breathe and respond to the spirit of the room.
