The refrain’s melody in this selection sways gently and slowly, much as a parent might cradle a babe in her or his arms; the verses expand the usual textual elements of this ancient chant, punctuated by echoes of the refrain. At the end of each verse, a short interlude by the accompaniment adds to the restfulness one feels. It’s an easily learned piece of simple beauty. Included in the octavo are parts for flute, oboe, and cello as well as a reproducible congregational part.
