The tune McKEE originated as an Irish melody that was brought to the United States, adapted by African American slaves, and became associated with the spiritual “I Know the Angels Done Changed My Name.” The melody as we know it was later adapted by the prominent African American composer and songwriter Harry T. Burleigh. Brief, yet festive, this arrangement is perfect as a postlude or for celebratory settings. The melody is primarily featured in the pedal, creating a unique and deeply resonant sound that is heightened with each modulation.
