The Mass of Holy Longing is intentionally restrained in tone, favoring depth and stillness over brighter, more buoyant spiritual expressions. Some cadences may even feel slightly ambiguous or unresolved, helping create a sense of longing for what is yet to come. Rooted naturally in the threshold of Advent and the restraint of Lent, this Mass may also find a home in Ordinary Time.
This Mass can be sung in unison by the assembly, or the choral parts can be added for a richer sound. The Mass also often alternates between chant and meter. The Penitential Act lists four invocation options and a call and response Amen at the conclusion. The Glory to God has a simple chant version or a more festive setting with meter and choral chant and the Alleluia and Gospel Verses have metered or chanted options for choir or cantor.
