Description:
The opening steady tempo and alternation of block chords in the accompaniment set a walking—even trudging—mood for the entrance of the plaintive melody, sung by a small treble group or solo. This transitions to a bit of give-and-take between men’s and women’s voices in the middle section, the initial plodding faintly echoed in the altered accompaniment. The audible journey continues more assuredly in the concluding SAB verse, which then suddenly recalls the original mood.
