This piece endeavors to portray the birth of Emmanuel with vigorous, pulsing rhythms, unexpected harmonies, a vibrant and almost percussive flute part, and a melody that paints the text with a few angular twists and turns. Several messianic titles are invoked throughout, leading the piece to a brief litany, which uses a familiar phrase from “Joy to the World.” A rousing descant brings the piece to a stirring finish
