Description:

Conversational Ukulele is an innovative elementary ukulele method based on John M. Feierabend's Conversational Solfege curriculum. Features include:

  • An introduction to tablature (TAB) notation for single-line melodies as well as chord symbols for strumming.
  • Thirteen units (aligned with Levels 1 and 2 of Conversational Solfege) that each introduce a new rhythmic or melodic concept, which is then reinforced with short musical patterns and traditional folk songs.
  • More than 200 online audio tracks with Guided Practice Activities for students—perfect for at-home assignments or virtual learning.
  • A simple three-step procedure for transferring "ear first" musical understanding to instrumental playing: (1) sing songs/patterns on rhythm or solfege syllables, (2) sing and finger on ukulele, (3) play on ukulele.
  • A brief history of the ukulele and an explanation—with pictures—of how to properly hold and play the instrument.
  • A Teacher's Manual with dozens of engaging activities (techniques), an overview of the method, instructions for how to use the online audio tracks, and assessment rubrics.

John M. Feierabend has spent decades compiling songs and rhymes from the memories of the American people in hopes that these treasures will be preserved for future generations. He is a leading authority on child development in music and movement, and served as Professor and Chair of the Music Education Department of the Hartt School of the University of Hartford.

Joshua A. Russell is Professor of Music Education at The Hartt School of the University of Hartford, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and string pedagogy. Prior to his arrival at the University of Hartford, he taught at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and the University of Colorado. He also taught instrumental music (orchestra and guitar) and general music (Grades 4–12) in northern Virginia and Colorado and conducted several youth symphonies.
