Russell, Joshua A.

Dr. Joshua A. Russell is Professor of Music Education at The Hartt School of the University of Hartford, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and string pedagogy.

Dr. Russell received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music composition and a Bachelor of Secondary Education degree in music education from Shepherd University, a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in music from the University of Colorado Boulder. Prior to his arrival at the University of Hartford, he taught at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and the University of Colorado. He also taught instrumental music (orchestra and guitar) and general music (Grades 4–12) in northern Virginia and Colorado; conducted several youth symphonies, including the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra, Loudoun County Public School Orchestra, and the Berkeley County Orchestras; and was the founding director of the Loudoun County String Orchestra and after-school program.

Dr. Russell’s research interests include musician health, teacher education, string education, and psychosocial-cognitive development in musical learning and teaching. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, The String Research Journal, Advances in Music Education Research, and New Directions in Music Education. In addition to authoring Statistics in Music Education (Oxford University Press), he has published research articles in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Psychology of Music, Arts Education Policy Review, Music Education Research, Music Educators Journal, Contributions to Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, and String Research Journal, among others. He often presents research throughout the United States and abroad, including in Ireland, England, Germany, China, Australia, Finland, Greece, Norway, and Cyprus.
