Description:
Commissioned by the American Federation Pueri Cantores to showcase diversity within the Spanish-language choral repertoire, this advanced choral piece written for SATB voices and piano accompaniment is a setting of Philippians chapter 2, in which Saint Paul exalts Christ as the “name above all names” for having taken on human form to die on the cross.
The piece is in three sections, mirroring the three-part form of the scripture passage: a gentle, stoic homophonic opening in C major; a polyphonic, somber middle section in A minor at the words “even death on a cross,” and an exuberant section in A major climaxing in the final statement that “Christ Jesus is the Lord!” For choirs looking for a musical challenge and an opportunity to showcase the choral arts using scriptural texts in Spanish, this masterful work makes for a tremendous concert piece, prelude or liturgical anthem.
