GIA was established in 1941 and has been part of the Harris family since 1967.

GIA’s roster of authors and composers include top names in music education such as Edwin E. Gordon, John M. Feierabend, Alice Parker, Barbara Conable, Tim Lautzenheiser, and Eugene Corporon. GIA’s choral series feature celebrated editors such as James Jordan, James Abbington, Uzee Brown, Jr., and Doreen Rao. GIA’s breadth of publications includes early childhood music curricula, beginning band methods, college level conducting texts, and music aptitude tests.

In 2013, GIA acquired Walton Music, perhaps the leading publisher of school and community choral music, including works by Eric Whitacre, Norman Luboff, and Ola Gjeilo, with more than 1,200 editions in print.

GIA’s sacred titles include works by Marty Haugen, Michael Joncas, Richard Proulx, and works from the Taizé Community in France. GIA continues to be a leader in church music and liturgical music publishing, including beloved hymnals for Roman Catholic parishes (in English and Spanish) and Black Protestant communities. The company has released hundreds of liturgical, choral, and instrumental recordings, publishes the GIA Quarterly magazine for pastoral musicians, and produces events such as new music seminars. Formerly the Gregorian Institute of America, GIA also stays true to its roots, offering music, books, and other resources on Gregorian chant.

In 2020, GIA expanded its catalog once again, acquiring both World Library Publications (WLP), a publisher of resources for Catholic music and liturgy, and Meredith Music, a publisher of instructional music education textbooks as well as resources for percussionists.

In 2006, GIA established ONE LICENSE LLC to provide music licensing and permissions for congregational song. ONE LICENSE serves more than 25,000 Roman Catholic and mainline Protestant churches, schools, retreat centers, religious communities, funeral homes, and campus ministries around the English-speaking world with active annual reprint licenses, and 15,000 of those communities also have a Podcast / Streaming license via the ONE LICENSE platform. ONE LICENSE, which is now co-owned by Oregon Catholic Press and operated by GIA, is proud to represent more than 350 Member Publishers who appreciate the accuracy of data and reporting tools and significant royalty distributions.
