With Heart and Voice is scored for standard concert band instrumentation plus piano.
When considering the piece for performance, there are several issues to consider first. The work opens with a feeling of “apprehension and reticence,” produced in large part by featuring the low woodwinds. Be advised that this includes a (not always available) contrabass clarinet.
The work requires a minimum of five competent percussionists playing on multiple instruments. With the exception of the very active timpani part, all percussionists will need to have fluent mallet skills, and some will need to be able execute extended passages that will work in hemiola against other predominant rhythms in the ensemble.
Make sure to peruse the piano part and decide if you have a musician who can play it.
