Whirlwind is constructed around a melody of four pitches: A–C–D–E. In Aeolian mode, (A minor) this set of pitches is versatile because it lacks the half step, much like Orff’s La-centered scale (A–C–D–E–G–A).
Notable in Blackshaw’s music is her writing for homemade instruments. In Whirlwind, four percussionists are asked to play the whirly: a length of corrugated irrigation hose that is spun around the head to create a singing sound.
Blackshaw also writes parts for each student on either water-glass chimes or homemade rattles. The composer provides conductors with detailed information on where to acquire and how to create each of these instruments.
