Variation Overture is dedicated to the American School Band Directors’ Association and received its world premiere performance at the American School Band Directors’ Association Convention at Cleveland, Ohio, in December 1961.
It is a concert overture that utilizes the structure of theme and variations. The simple, diatonic theme is presented in four distinct settings: march, waltz, lyric, and fanfare.
Williams’s contemporary harmonies and romantic melodic style are prevalent in this work for young band. Variation Overture is 184 measures long and is approximately six minutes in duration.
