The Battell is written for full band, including three percussion parts and timpani.
The scoring is tutti in seven of the movements. Movements four, six, seven, ten, and twelve have a more chamber-like setting.
Every movement is in the key of B-flat major, with the exception of movement eleven, which is in F major.
Five of the movements are in cut time, four are in 3/2, three are in 6/4, and one, movement eight, begins in 3/2, moves to 6/4, and then returns to 3/2.
