Description:
The first movement of Suite Antique, “Preamble,” unfolds expressively with warm, gently moving harmonies. The second movement, “Pastorale,” begins with a solo flute melody in the heights that descends in gentle turns. A lyric pastorale is then developed melodically and contrapuntally. Finally, the opening flute melody returns in a reverse of the beginning disappearing up into the sky. The title of the third movement, “Quodlibet,” means “what pleases” in Latin and was a term used by baroque-era composers for a piece in which several tunes were combined in a light-hearted and spirited manner. The entire suite is suitable for recital, or the individual movements can be readily programmed separately as service voluntaries.
