The piece was originally written for string quartet and djembe in 1998 and was subsequently choreographed for dance performances by Robert Battle, with whom the composer has shared a lengthy collaboration.
The piece has also been arranged, as of 2008, for saxophone quartet and djembe. The piece itself is a swirl of cultural influence, as the thoroughly Western ensemble performs music based simultaneously on elements of African hand-drumming and middle-Eastern melody.
