Spirals of Light is a work that is festive in nature. It was written for the North Carolina 2006 All-District Band (grades nine and ten) as a commission from the South Central District Bandmasters Association.
Published in 2007 by Carl Fischer Music, this work, structured loosely in ABA form, offers excellent training tools for the growing ensemble. Within the brief four-minute composition, opportunities for solo winds, mallet percussion, and the teaching of subdivision of rhythms abound.
There is interest for both player and listener. Two main ideas are incorporated. The first is a fanfare-like statement; the second, an Irish folk-like melody, is presented in a brisk 6/8 feel and, in the middle section of the work, within a 4/4 context incorporating a variety of melodic shapes.
The work is suitable for young band concert programming and festivals. It can readily serve as a celebratory opener or a work within the body of a program.
