This arrangement was born out of need for a simple choral reflection on the gospel for the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B, when Jesus drives out an unclean spirit from a man in the synagogue (Mark 1:21–28). Thomas Troeger’s evocative hymn addresses the unclean spirit; and the simplicity and sturdiness of the Latvian folk tune, KAS DZIEDAJA, provides the basis for a declamatory setting of the hymn. The arrangement was designed to require minimal rehearsal in the weeks after Christmas.
