Shadow Rituals is described by Keith Kinder as “a dazzling display of rhythmic energy, attractive melody and colorful scoring...”
Upon a first listen of the work, it is difficult to ignore the pervasive rhythmic drive and energy as a unifying foundational premise. However, on further listening, the melodic ingenuity of such a young composer quickly surfaces.
The work essentially employs two themes from beginning to end, along with a brief third theme that is actually constructed of intervals from the first theme.
Both primary themes are altered by means of canonic imitation, retrograde, augmentation, and counterpoint. A steady, bright tempo of quarter note = 186 is maintained as a constant from the downbeat to the final note.
Contrasts in tempo are not necessary for this composition that showcases its craft with imaginative melodic and rhythmic alterations.
