The working title of the piece was originally Savannah River Payday, after a short story by Erskine Caldwell, but the composer changed the title to Savannah River Holiday to avoid potential copyright infringements. The short story depicts the violent and quixotic exploits of two young men, and the music may be described as capturing the energy and frivolity of their day.
The piece is approximately nine minutes long and possesses significant technical and musical challenges appropriate for an advanced high school or college/university ensemble. The bright colors, energetic rhythmic figures, and expansive lyricism typify a style that Nelson was to use in several other pieces, including Rocky Point Holiday, Aspen Jubilee, and Sonoran Desert Holiday
