Sanctuary is a single-movement work for concert band with the title representing a diverse environment of musical images. According to the composer, the term Sanctuary can imply a place of solitude, comfort, rest, prayer, or protection; it can also suggest a place that is strong and imposing or one that is very small and private.
The opening bell sounds establish a spirit of peace and joyful reverence, and the subsequent melodic materials in the solo horn help promote a reflective and reassuring atmosphere. A sense of nostalgia or “wistfulness” can be drawn from a simple progression of three chords that permeate the entire composition.
Expressions of power and strength are also represented in Sanctuary’s dark and imposing climax, which ultimately leads to a more relaxed episode of repose, space, and distance.
The work concludes with the return of the three-chord harmony, which transitions to the return of the solo horn motive, and leads to a concluding echo of the opening bell sounds.
