As the title implies, Redline Tango is based on and contains elements of the Argentine dance form tango. It is in single-movement sonata form and incorporates elements of the tango, a reflection of Mackey’s extensive experience writing for dance companies in New York. On the origin and inspiration of the title, he writes:

Redline Tango takes its title from two sources. The first is the common term of “redlining an engine,” or pushing it to the limit. In the case of this score, “redline” also refers to the “red line,” or the IRT subway line (2 and 3 trains) of the New York subway system, which is the train that goes between my apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), where this work was premiered. Originally commissioned by the Brooklyn Philharmonic, this is the reworked, or “windestrated” version.

Approximately nine minutes in length, Redline Tango is available as rental- only from Mackey’s self-publishing company, Ostimusic. On a six-degree scale of difficulty, the piece is a Grade 6 as it contains technical and musical challenges congruent with other Grade 6 works.
