The composition may be described as a collection of variations growing out of the musical “buds” introduced in the opening measures.
Seven contrasting sections following the theme imply the styles of a march, waltz, dirge, scherzo, fanfare, chorale, and fugue. This exciting and rigorous composition features challenging moments for soloists and small groups within the ensemble.
Minimal twentieth century performance techniques (free-time arpeggios and glissandi) are employed successfully in the final fourteen measures of the piece, creating an exciting closing to this twelve-minute work.
