According to the program notes provided with the score, Postcard from Singapore was commissioned by M.A.S.T. Music, Singapore, for a concert featuring Sparke’s music to be given by the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band.

There are three movements based on traditional folk songs which are popular with children in Singapore.

Movement 1 is built around the beloved folksong “Gelang Sipaku Gelang,” which is associated with the Geylang area and addresses community spirit and living together in harmony. Movement 2 uses a folksong from Tanjung Katong, an area on the southeast- ern coast of Singapore. The song, which is popular with children’s choirs, is “Di-Tanjung Katong.” Movement 3 is a setting of two melodies: “Lenggang Kangkung,” which tells of the graceful swaying of watercress in the rice paddy fields, and “Munnaeru Vaalibaa,” with which Sparke cleverly combines with the first melody to produce an interesting polyphonic texture.
