Schwanda, the Bagpiper is a two-act folk opera based on Czech children stories. The inclusion of a bagpiper, a polka, Czech folk songs, and Czech dance numbers helps to pay homage to Czech nationalism.

The musical style, harmony, content, and orchestration are reflective of late romantic music, particularly that of Czech composers Dvorák and Smetana.

The influence of Smetana’s folkloric melodies and the overall content of his opera The Bartered Bride is clear.

The light-hearted nature of Weinberger’s opera is grounded in a Germanic contrapuntal influence.
