Nine Greek Dances was originally composed for string orchestra and was derived from a series of thirty-six Greek dances that Skalkottas wrote between 1934–36. Skalkottas drew on melodies and folk tunes found in the Merlier archive recordings, published collections, and popular songs. These dances were arranged for various ensembles, including orchestra, string quartet, violin, and piano. Approximately two-thirds of the thirty-six dances are based on actual folksongs from different parts of the Greek mainland and islands, while the other third are original to Skalkottas’s folksong style. Unlike most of his works, many of the dances were performed publicly during his lifetime. Dated between 1940–42, this arrangement of nine dances for military band existed only in manuscript form.

This work is nine movements and approximately twenty minutes in length. Each movement has a unique character, specific scoring, and technical demands. The editor, Gunther Schuller, has indicated suggestions in the score for two separate suites each approximately ten minutes in length.
