Kallman includes the following description of the work:
A brief introduction presents the characteristic cakewalk rhythm, which can be heard in various guises throughout the work. A playful opening tune in the solo alto saxophone incorporates the rhythm and is answered with a contrasting syncopated euphonium solo, with the cakewalk rhythm present in the accompaniment throughout. This quickly disintegrates or “metamorphoses” into a minimalistic development section where instruments are formed into independent families, each repeating a melodic or rhythmic fragment within its own metrical structure. Above this overlapping texture a new sustained tune is eventually introduced in the unison horns and euphonium. Only the xylophone maintains the constant cakewalk rhythm throughout this extended section, while the other percussion and winds continue to enter and exit the texture independently. A build to a climax leads to a transition out of the minimalistic treat- ment, which allows for a restatement of the two opening tunes and a short coda.
