This composition displays Wood’s innovative use of melodic development through the fusion of the folksongs into a single piece. The first folk tune, “The Good Old Way,” is a traditional Manx air written mostly in Dorian mode. The song was converted to a Methodist revival hymn in the late nineteenth century and can be found in print as early as 1896 in William Henry Gill’s Manx National Songs.

The lively second folksong, “The Manx Fiddler,” is a reel, a traditional Scottish or Gaelic dance akin to the American hoedown.

The third folksong is a traditional Manx ballad, included in the 1896 compilation Manx Ballads and Music. “Sweet Water in the Common” tells the story of a Manx custom of the gathering of a twenty-four-man jury to resolve issues of boundaries and watercourses.
