Mangulina, a five-minute work based on traditional dance rhythms from the Dominican Republic, was commissioned in 2001 by Daniel J. Schmidt and the Mars Hill College Wind Symphony, John T. West and the Western Carolina University Wind Ensemble, Richard Clary and the University of Kentucky Wind Ensemble, and William A. Gora and the Appalachian State University Wind Ensemble. The resulting single-movement work is through-composed. Mangulina was originally composed for wind ensemble, but it has been transcribed by the composer for orchestra.
A mangulina is a popular spirited southern dance form of Spanish origin characterized as being full of vivacity and grace. Music from the Dominican Republic, rich with complex rhythms and intriguing colors, was the inspiration for Basler’s Mangulina.
