Description:
Laudamus Te is a service of lessons and carols intended for use during the Advent season and for Christmas or Christmas Eve worship. There are seven Scripture lessons, one before each song, that detail the journey from the darkness and despair of Israel’s exile to the ecstatic joy and comfort of the birth of the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ. The first three carols deal thematically with despair and hope, darkness and light, exile and promise, as the “redemption” motif found in the tenor solo of “Prayer of Israel” is used several times in the first portion of the service. The final four carols, beginning with the titular “Laudamus Te,” are intended as a lavishing of praise on the newborn Jesus, as the choir and assembly witness together the birth of Christ, the mystery of the Incarnation, and the angels singing triumphantly in the heavens. (The seven pieces included in Laudamus te are also sold as individual octavos. They include: “Prayer of Israel,” “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus,” “Carol of the Flower,” “Laudamus te,” “Carol of the Nativity,” “Carol of the Angels,” and “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing.”)
