from the Foreword
In this compact volume, teacher-conductor Matthew Roeder shares seven enduring lessons, or central “truths,” about the art of leading effective and engaging music rehearsals.
These lessons, drawn from thousands of hours working with students from all walks of life, are enhanced by commentary from seven leading wind band conductors. Their insights reveal an important throughline: that meaningful music making is grounded in authentic connection and positive interactions with ensemble members.
Passion from the Podium is filled with takeaways for your next rehearsal, ideas that will enrich your musical leadership and unlock the artistic potential of your ensemble.
Matthew Roeder is Associate Professor of conducting and music education in the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he currently serves as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Enrollment Management. For seventeen years prior to this appointment, Dr. Roeder held the position of Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Golden Buffalo Marching Band at CU.
