Incidental Suite is a three-movement piece composed in 1966 and published by Wingert-Jones Publications. The composition is written for traditional wind band instrumentation, including traditional percussion parts. The movements are “Tarantella,” “Nocturne,” and “Rondo.”
The performance time for Incidental Suite is approximately ten minutes. This composition, like many of Smith’s works, is very user-friendly; that is to say, it is composed in a way to keep all instrumentalists of the ensemble engaged and interested in rehearsal and performance. All sections of the ensemble have opportunities to carry the melodic line through the composition. Incidental Suite also highlights great tutti ensemble playing while still providing opportunities for soloists. The piece is on several state music lists.
