In the far west of France, you will find the Brittany, or Breton, region of this fascinating country. The Breton language is of Celtic descent with close relations to Welsh, Cornish, Manx, Scottish, and Irish Gaelic.

The traditional dances of this region vary by their geographical region. There are three types of dances found in Brittany: the oldest, commonly danced in lines and/or circles, such as the gavotte and an dro; newer dances from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, such as the jabadao and bal; and third, the most recent introduction of couples dances of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries such as the polka, mazurka, and schottisches.

It is from the oldest variety that Broege takes his inspiration for this work. Four tunes have been woven together to create this simple yet fascinating new work for band: “An Dro,” “Gavotte du Bas-Leon,” “Dans loup,” and “Dans mout.”

Each of the first three are heard individually in succession while the fourth is superimposed on the first two.
