The work’s arch form features repetitive rhythms at quarter note = 120 that emulate the sounds of timepieces. A lyrical rubato middle section interrupts the piece’s rigidity but eventually gives way to a return of the original driving motives.
The score includes cross-cuing for horn and oboe and offers good opportunties for nine percussionists. The percussion parts are exposed but not technically difficult. Four whirling tubes are also specified, and this unusual effect will appeal to young percussionists. The lyric motive is presented by solo flute.
