It is a single movement work, of moderate difficulty, with contrasting sections, about eight minutes in length. It is one of Williams’s thirty-one published band works and is among those most frequently performed.

The middle hymn-like section of the work is based on the university’s alma mater, known today as the “Hymn to Evansville” or the “University Hymn.” It was composed in 1926 by Mary Ellen McClure, a Class of 1925 graduate, with words by McClure and Evaline Tureck.

The song was the second-place winner in a school music contest, but was much more popular than the first-place winner, and became the school song by default.
