In 2003 Jack Stamp, conductor of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania High School Honor Band, commissioned Yurko for a composition for the fortieth anniversary concert. This commission was in memory of Matthew Hornick, a former member and a very talented young high school band conductor.
The commission stated that the ensemble wanted a composition that celebrated Matthew’s life and not an elegy of remembrance. The premiere was given January 2004 on the IUP campus, and a second performance by the honor band was given at the 2004 PMEA Convention in Erie, Pennsylvania. The composer thanks Jack Stamp, Nicholas Williams, Brad Genevro, Don Magee, Preston Hazzard, and Lowell Graham for their recent performances of Danza No. 2.
The full score is written in concert pitch. There are no key signatures in either the full score or the parts. All parts are written within the normal range of the high school wind ensemble or band.
