The piece is approximately eleven minutes in duration and requires piccolo, three flutes, two oboes, English horn, bassoon, contrabassoon, E-flat clarinet, four clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet in B-flat; four soprano, two alto, and two baritone saxophones; four horns; three trumpets in C; two trombones; bass trombone; tuba; timpani; numerous percussion instruments requiring three players; piano (doubling celesta); harp; and four string basses.
The work opens and closes with slow, fluid melodies designed to evoke an impression of the “massive, enduring universe.” Framed by these sections are four dances separated by changes in tempo, melodic and rhythmic material, and texture.
