Blackwater was written in 2005 on a commission from Timothy Reynish, who also conducted the premiere on March 1, 2006, leading the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble.
Carroll designed the single movement work for bands at the Grade 3 to 3-1/2 difficulty level, and its duration is about six minutes. The compositional style is lyrical and dance-like, and could also be considered somewhat nationalistic, since its inspiration is from the River Blackwater, the largest river in southwest Ireland which flows through the counties of Waterford and Cork before emptying into the Celtic sea at Youghal.
An old Irish tune, “Cape Clear,” is the source for the main theme, written over an original ground, which then becomes the contrasting B material of Blackwater in a dance-like section in 5/4 meter.
