Description:

African American Composers in the Wind Band Tradition highlights the rich but often overlooked contributions of African American composers to the wind band literature. With this volume, author Dakeyan Graham fills a critical gap by spotlighting the artistry of composers who have been historically underrepresented in concert programs, curricula, and scholarly study.

Part I traces the history of wind band music among Black composers decade by decade, documenting stylistic developments and a comprehensive catalog of composers and works from the 1940s to the present.

Part II offers detailed musical analysis, composer biographies, and pedagogical insights for five seminal compositions:

  • From the Delta by William Grant Still
  • American Guernica by Adolphus Hailstork
  • Canvas by George Walker
  • Amen! by Carlos Simon
  • Come Sunday by Omar Thomas

Taken together, this volume offers accessible and actionable content for diversifying concert programming and fostering inclusivity.

By honoring a vital part of America’s musical heritage, African American Composers in the Wind Band Tradition affirms the importance of representation while inspiring a new generation to celebrate diversity in musical performance and study.
