Townsend Losey is a conductor and composer serving as Associate Professor of Music at Portland Bible College, where he teaches courses in music theory and arranging, as well as private lessons in voice and piano, directs the PBC Choir, and oversees the Chapel Worship program. His work is characterized by a passionate commitment to musical excellence and community engagement. Prior to joining PBC, Losey served as Artistic Director of Sing Napa Valley, where he led rehearsals and performances with a vision for inspiring communal singing and educating the community about excellent choral music. As Founding Artistic Director of Ensoma Creative in Los Angeles, Losey demonstrated his innovative programming and leadership abilities. Between 2015-2019, he led fourteen concert programs, including performances of major works such as Fauré Requiem, Duruflé Requiem, and Handel's Dixit Dominus with professional orchestra and soloists. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he produced eleven groundbreaking virtual choir projects, creating meaningful collaborations between musicians and visual artists. His conducting career also includes a fellowship with Spire Chamber Ensemble & Baroque Orchestra in Kansas City, where he assisted in professional productions including Considering Matthew Shepard, Handel's Messiah, and We Are the Music Makers: Amplifying Black Composers, and conducted Ulysses Kay's "O, Praise the Lord." During his fellowship, he provided musical, technical, and staging guidance in rehearsals while also supporting logistical coordination with contracted musicians, donors, and volunteers. Losey's compositions reflect his deep understanding of the human experience and his commitment to musical excellence. His published work "The Willow Lullaby" (Walton Music, Jo-Michael Scheibe Choral Series) exemplifies his accessible yet sophisticated compositional style. His catalog includes works for various ensembles, from intimate chamber pieces to full orchestral works. Throughout his career, Losey has maintained a strong commitment to sacred music and liturgical composition. His experience includes serving as Director of Worship Ministries at Ascension Lutheran Church in Rancho Palos Verdes, where he conducted both handbell and singing choirs, designed immersive liturgical services, and created custom musical arrangements enabling collaboration across diverse ensembles. Losey's educational background includes a Master of Music in Choral Music from the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, where he studied composition with Frank Ticheli and Donald Crockett, and conducting with Troy Quinn, Tram Sparks, and Christian Grases. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Composition from Azusa Pacific University, where he received the Outstanding Senior Award in Composition. Commended by Grant Gershon for his "musical" conducting of Handel's Dixit Dominus and praised by Richard Burchard for his interpretation of choral music, Losey continues to make significant contributions to the choral and worship music community through his work as a conductor, composer, and educator. Townsend and his wife, Gabrielle, live in the Portland area with their four children.
