Koapeng, Mokale

Mokale Koapeng is a South African-born composer based in Zambia since 2018. Apart from teaching composition at several universities, he has been active in a number of community development projects promoting music education and cultural activities. He was the vice president and president of New Music South Africa, a South African chapter of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM). He was the composer-in-residence for the Consonance Festival in Saint Nazare, France, 2004, Ihlombe: South African Choral Festival, 2010, and the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival, 2011. He has received commissions from the South African Music Right Organization (SAMRO), National Symphony Orchestra (SA), National Arts Festival (SA), University of Pretoria, Wits (University) Arts and Literature Experience (WALE), Classical Movements (USA), and many more. Isijabane, for orchestra, commissioned by SAMRO, was performed by the South African National Youth Orchestra. His orchestral piece, Ixesha! Ke Nako! was premiered by the New Orchestra of Washington (NOW) at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Together with Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, and Motsumi Makhene, Mokale co-composed music for the award winning Milestones: The Musical. He is currently the head of the music department at Rusangu University, Zambia.
