Hemberg, Eskil

Eskil Hemberg (1938-2004) was a composer and conductor born in Stockholm, Sweden. He was working as a freelance composer and choral director, as well as president of the International Federation for Choral Music until his death.

Mr. Hemberg received a music teacher’s degree in 1961, a higher cantor's degree in 1961, and a higher organist's degree in 1964. He also conducted the orchestra with Herbert Blomstedt at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

Mr. Hemberg was the executive producer of the Swedish Radio from 1963 to 1970, and was the planning manager and director of foreign relations at the National Institute of Concerts from 1970 to 1983. He worked as general manager and artistic director of the Gothenburg Opera from 1984 to 1987, general manager and artistic director of the Royal Swedish Opera from 1987 to 1996, and conductor of the Stockholm University Chorus from 1959 to 1984. Mr. Hemberg was president of the Society of Swedish Composers and the International Music Council of UNESCO, and was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
