David A. Stringham has taught music to students of all ages in public school, private studio, college, and community settings. He is currently Associate Professor of Music at James Madison University, where he serves as director of the university’s Center for Inclusive Music Engagement, mentors undergraduate and graduate researchers, and facilitates courses related to jazz studies and music learning and teaching.

Dr. Stringham’s research and teaching interests include composition, improvisation, music technology, and lifelong musicianship. He has presented research and best practice sessions in local, state, national, and international venues. His work has been supported by 4-VA and National Endowment for the Arts; recent publications appear in Research Studies in Music Education, Visions of Research in Music Education, and in the edited volume Selected Papers from the 6th International Symposium on Assessment in Music Education (GIA Publications, Inc., 2018).

Dr. Stringham has served as Chair of NAfME’s Council for Music Composition and Research Council Chair for Virginia Music Educators Association. Prior to joining the faculty at James Madison University in 2010, he taught middle school and high school instrumental music in New York State and earned degrees in music education from University of Rochester (BM with Highest Distinction, MM, PhD).
