Sukura, Aaron Bebe
Aaron Bebe Sukura, a Senior Instructor at the University of Ghana was born in the Upper West Region of Ghana and showed a great enthusiasm for music at an early age. Even before he could walk, he would crawl and climb to the xylophone anytime his father was playing, often holding the mallets together with his father as he played. A skillful player, Aaron has developed his unique style of playing the gyil by combining traditional and classical music into his own compositions. In addition to the gyil, Aaron also performs on the seperewa, a harp-lute of Ghana’s Akan-speaking people; the mbira, the Zimbabwean soul instrument; the atenteben, a Ghanaian bamboo flute; and the African guitar.
Aaron is the co-founder of the Local Dimension Band with Professor John Collins of the University of Ghana Music Department and has played with the Novisi Dance Group, Ghana Dance Ensemble, Pan African Orchestra, Hewale Sounds, and the Abibigromma Theater Company of the University of Ghana School of Performing Arts.
Aaron has taught gyil to students from around the world and has performed extensively in the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
