Van Liew, Karissa
Karissa O. Van Liew is an international music educator with a specialty in Secondary General Music. She received her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Master’s in Traditional and World Music from the University of Sheffield. Karissa seeks to provide her students with a comprehensive music education that allows them to actively experience a broad spectrum of music areas. She believes in the value of transcultural music and sees it as an opportunity to encourage students to become global citizens. Apart from teaching, Karissa is a practicing ethnomusicologist who enjoys playing alongside musicians of various cultures and learning music from around the world. Karissa began playing traditional Korean percussion in 2016 in South Korea. She has a passion to see Korean music performed in schools all over the world, particularly in the USA. Karissa has presented academic papers and practical workshops on Korean traditional music at national and international conferences to inform and train educators to engage with these art forms. She will continue exploring our beautiful world, engaging with others through music, and developing music education resources for unfamiliar music cultures.
