Zarco, John
John Zarco is Director of Bands at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he conducts the UTSA Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and University Band. His responsibilities also include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting, wind literature, and music education.
Prior to his appointment at UTSA, Dr. Zarco served as Director of Bands at Millersville University in Pennsylvania and as a public school instrumental music teacher at Saratoga High School, in Saratoga, California. Dr. Zarco received a D.M.A. in conducting from the University of Minnesota as well as B.M. and M.M. degrees from California State University, Sacramento. His primary conducting teachers include Craig Kirchhoff, Robert Halseth, and Harvey Benstein. Dr. Zarco is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda and an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
In addition to his work at the university level, Dr. Zarco has conducted the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA) Symphonic Winds and Philharmonic Winds. He has held office on the Executive Board of the Texas Music Educators Conference and serves as the College Division Chair for TMEA Region 29. Dr. Zarco is active as a guest clinician and conductor, with memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the Texas Bandmasters Association.
