Description:
Great performances don’t happen by accident. They begin with intentional, purposeful rehearsals.
In Strategic Rehearsing for Superior Musical Performances, veteran band director David Vandewalker offers a practical, systematic approach to developing the skills and artistry that lead to exceptional ensemble performances.
Drawing on decades of teaching experience, Vandewalker breaks down the foundational elements of great music making—tone, articulation, intonation, balance, expression, and more—into clear, teachable concepts. He also shares effective rehearsal shortcuts and creative uses of metaphor, analogy, and imagery that make abstract musical ideas easier for students to understand and apply.
At the heart of the book is a step-by-step rehearsal blueprint that shows directors how to isolate fundamental concepts, build skills from simple to complex, and bridge the gap between daily fundamentals and concert literature. The free online resources, including flex band arrangements and video demonstrations, help directors put these strategies into practice.
Whether you’re leading your first rehearsal or starting your twentieth year of teaching, Strategic Rehearsing provides the tools to rehearse with greater clarity and intention while inspiring students to become more expressive, confident musicians.
David W. Vandewalker is an accomplished conductor and educator whose work has shaped music programs and leadership culture nationwide. A member of the American Bandmasters Association, he currently conducts the Georgia Wind Symphony, serves as Executive Director for the Servant Leadership Association for Music (SLAM), and is a frequent clinician and conductor.
As a young director, I have sometimes felt that the most important things I want to teach to my students are also the hardest to put into words. Dr. Vandewalker has a remarkable ability to make the abstract qualities of great music-making concrete and attainable. Through clear, practical language and the methodical isolation of discrete skills, all of my students—even my youngest or least-developed musicians—have been able to experience clear growth. Strategic Rehearsing has made excellence feel less mysterious and far more teachable, giving students (and me!) not only a clearer understanding of what great music-making sounds and feels like, but also a tangible path toward achieving it.—Jared Best
